TWENTY

DARBY. MY DEAR, sweet-natured Darby. She was a complete innocent. She knew nothing about this war, or the truth of my identity. Darby had been my one true friend and had wanted nothing from me but my own friendship in return. We’d been confidantes. We’d been everything to each other.

My throat tightened with emotion, and I turned to Tamlain with a look of pleading. The words formed on my tongue without my bidding, because I already suspected the answer before I spoke.

“Would Oberon really do that? Torture and kill an innocent?”

He hesitated, exchanging a look with Dianthe. “Yes, he will torture her. It will be cruel and your friend will suffer, but I do not believe that he will kill her yet.”

Dianthe snorted in disgust. “Think our dear leader has gone soft, do you?”

I couldn’t help but look hopefully at Tamlain.

But he was shaking his head. “No. It’s only that he will need to keep his hostage alive if he is to have any hope of controlling Ember.”

“This whole thing is crazy,” I said. “We have to save her.”

Tamlain looked grave. “We will do all we can, but there is very little time to plan.”

Plans. All of mine flew abruptly out the window at Tamlain’s reminder. My deadline to save Darby was barely more than a day away. There was no way that I could return to Earth and secure a mate in such a short window of time. Even if I’d been the daughter of a famous, rich alpha male from a huge pack, I imagined I’d still have trouble finding a mate who was willing to become involved in an inter-dimensional war between Elfhame and Earth.

I shook my head, trying to clear it. I had to focus on what was most important.

“And that’s not all,” Dianthe said in a tone of voice I really didn’t like.

Fresh dread welled up inside of me. I’d been through so much over the last few days... I wasn’t sure how much more bad news I could take.

The female warrior shot me a worried look, as though she could tell I was close to the breaking point. “You must try to stay calm, Ember... but Oberon has dispatched Pavia back to Earth with a new mission.”

I wrinkled my nose at the mention of the woman I knew as Geneva Padfoot. “Back to Earth? Why? She’ll have no place in the Greystalker pack now that Cai knows who and what she is. She’ll be banished, just like I was.”

Dianthe came over to me and took my hand. Her skin was cool and smooth; her features perfectly composed. I was not comforted by her attempt at reassurance.

“What is it?” I asked, pulling my hand away sharply. “What are you not telling me?”

Dianthe sighed. “She has been given orders to kill the Greystalker alpha’s son—the one called Cai.”

I blinked at her, sure that I’d heard her wrong. As the words sank in and understanding blossomed, I realized that Oberon might have already anticipated my plan to mate with someone on Earth.
